Trekking in Tibet means to explore on feet its largest and highest plateau on the earth is surrounded by the most extensive jumble of mountains found on any continent. Stretching for almost 3000 km and forming its entire southern boundary is the Himalayas and along its western extremity is equally rugged Karakoram. Between two ranges are found all fourteen of world’s 8000 m peaks including Mt. Everest. In the northern Tibet the plateau is a high, arid expanse known as chang Thang, the northern plains while eastern. Tibet is bounded by a succession of mountains (known as Chinese “Chi” as the Hengduan Shan) where three Asia’s largest rivers cut deep, parallel gorge on their journey from plateau to the sea.

Many people identify Tibet with the northern Chang Tang – a desolate cold windswept desert on the roof of the world but unusually diverse and strikingly beautiful landscape of snowcapped summits, lush rhododendron and conifer forest and fertile agriculture valley also lies north of the Himalayas
